Fox Fire Ridge Project

Installed December 2004
Second Installed 2005

These photos show the two Bergey XL.1 wind turbines, both on 104 ft. tilt-up towers, and the solar panels that all work together to provide power to Fox Fire Ridge. The first turbine and electronic components were installed in December of 2004. The second turbine and 1kW of PV solar were added in 2005. The solar panels are important for this off-grid system because they provide much of the necessary backup power during the summer months when the wind resource is low.

The completed system at Fox Fire Ridge has two (2) Bergey XL 1 wind turbines, 1kW of solar, and a mid-sized battery bank.

Pictured above is the 1kW PV solar array that functions with the 2 turbines at Fox Fire Ridge.

Fox Fire Ridge is the perfect application for a renewable energy system. Since there are currently no utility lines to this undeveloped site, the cost of installing and maintaining the renewable energy system is actually much less than paying for the utility-run and the regular monthly usage bills that would follow.

Placing a renewable energy system at Fox Fire Ridge will also serve to protect the environment. Not only will the system prevent the disruption of running new power lines (and don't forget the poles!), but every kilowatt produced by this system is one less kilowatt that has to be produced by other non-renewable sources. Enjoy the view!

(Pictured above) Inside the shed are 16 batteries for backup power, the inverter, controller, and other components that must be sheltered from the weather. The batteries will require minimal maintenance - checking water levels once per month.
